Project 02: Advertisements

Overview:
For this project you will create a series of three ads based on a product, service, or organization. Think about fashion, technology, household goods, furniture, subscription services, restaurants....The final ads should relate by being tied together by concept and follow a cohesive design program that is evident when the ads are presented. Design principals being addressed in this project are use of space in various formats, typography, composition, and general synergy between across design elements.

Take a look at ad campaigns across multiple genres, interests and demographics. See what it is that makes an ad successful or not so successful. Is there a clear message? Is it right for the audience? Is it right for the product?

Details:
The ads will be created by utilizing found images in magazines and books. You must find and use an existing logo (and possibly tag line) and incorporate those elements into each of the three ads. Design elements to look for are: images, photographs, illustrations, type, logos, etc. After you have collected all of your images, they will need to be scanned (300 ppi at the very least). You will assemble the ads on the computer with Photoshop where you will learn the basic tools to organize, process, and assemble images. You may also utilize Illustrator or InDesign to assemble your ads if you wish. You might write some copy for the ad as well, but nothing too heavy handed.

Presentation:
Think of this in the context of an ad pitch to a potential client. Your concept, message and tone should be clear and deliberate and should be delivered with a purpose. Also consider the type of publication in which your ads should appear: Vogue, Popular Science, People, GQ, Martha Stewart Living, O, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, etc...look at different magazines and figure out where your ad would appear at home.

Your three ad sizes will be the following: 8" x 10", 5" x 5", 3" x 10.5". You will turn in two boards, the large ad on one by itself and the other two on the second board. I will post a diagram later.

I will post some more ad examples later this week, but you can see a few here:

I'll post more recent ads soon! In the mean time, email me your choice(s) of companies, and we will narrow it down if necessary - I'd like to have your choice decided by Thursday. Also, on Thursday, bring in two ads that you think are successful conceptually and aesthetically, and we will discuss them. Be ready to put them up and discuss!

Due Date: Thursday, 10/13/2011
