Project 02: Collage Ad Overview
DUE: Thursday, October 4, 2012
Overview:
For this project you will create a series of three ads based on a product, service, or organization. Think fashion, technology, household goods, furniture, and the list goes on! The final ads should relate by being tied together by concept and follow a cohesive design program that is evident when the ads are presented. Design principals being addressed in this project are use of space in various formats, typography, composition, and general synergy between design elements.
Take a look at ad campaigns across multiple genres, interests and demographics. See what it is that makes an ad successful or not so successful. Is there a clear message? Is it right for the audience? Is it right for the product?
Details:
The ads will created by utilizing found images in magazines. You must find and use an existing logo (and tagline if there is one) and incorporate those elements across each of the three ads. Design elements to look for are: photographs, illustrations, type, logos, etc. After you have collected all of your images, they will need to scanned. You will assemble the ads on the computer with Photoshop where you will learn the basic tools to organize, process, and assemble images. (You may also utilize Illustrator or InDesign to assemble your ads.)
Support your concept through original copy if it is applicable. Try your hand at being a copywriter too!
Be sure to incorporate some contact information, even if it is simply a web address. You need to give people an avenue to get more information about your company, or to buy the product.
Presentation:
Think of this in the context of an ad pitch to a potential client. Your concept, message and tone should be clear and deliberate and should be delivered with a purpose.
By next Tuesday, you must have communicated with me about your company, so we can get started with your image gathering right away. Bring an ad that you like, and we will pin it up on the board to talk about elements and approaches used in advertising. We probably won't talk about all of them, but I want us to at least have a discussion about what makes ads successful.
Ad dimensions:
8" W x 10" H
5" x 5"
3" W x 10.5" H
