Project 2: Collage Advertisements

PROJECT DUE: 10.08.15 (Thursday)

Overview:

For this project you will create a series of three ads based on a product, service, or organization. Think fashion, technology, household goods, furniture...and the list goes on! The final ads should relate by being tied together by concept and follow a cohesive design program that is evident when the ads are presented. Design principals being addressed in this project are use of space in various formats, typography, composition, and general synergy across all design elements.

Take a look at ad campaigns from multiple genres, interests and demographics. See what it is that makes an ad successful or not so successful. Is there a clear message? Is it right for the audience? Is it right for the product?

 Details:

The ads will created by utilizing found images in magazines and online. You must find and use an existing logo and tagline and incorporate those elements across each of the three ads. Design elements to look for are: images, photographs, illustrations, type, logos, etc. After you have collected all of your images, they will need to scanned. We will assemble the ads on the computer with Photoshop where you will learn the basic tools to organize, process, and assemble images; you may also utilize Illustrator or InDesign to assemble your ads. Do not rely too heavily on a concept the company currently uses in their advertising. While your concept should be appropriate to the brand, it needs to be from your own imagination.

Presentation:

Think of this in the context of an ad pitch to a potential client. Your concept, message and tone should be clear and deliberate and should be delivered with a purpose.

BY CLASS ON TUESDAY (09.22.15):
Have 3 companies for which you would like to design ads. I must approve your choice before you move forward with your design process. Please email me before Tuesday with your options, and I will let you know which one(s) you can use.

This project requires image research, so on Thursday, 09/24/15, you can spend the class time looking through magazines, books, and online for your images. We will not meet as a class on Thursday, as I will be out of town, so it is important that you continue your concept development and image searches before we meet again on Tuesday, 09/29/15.

Notes About Images:

This project is the only one this semester for which you should use images that you did not create. When you scan in your images, be sure they are scanned in at least 300 - 600 pixels per inch. Scan your images in at a higher resolution if you are going to scale up (enlarge) your images in your ads. If you pull images to use from the web, be sure to use the "Large" option on the Google advanced image search options to get as high resolution as possible. If your ads have blurry images because of low res images or scans, it will count against your craft grade. Before beginning assembly of your ads, also change your images to CMYK (in Photoshop, Image > Mode > CMYK). We will go through some basic Photoshop on 09/29/15, but check out Lynda.com before then if Photoshop is completely new to you.

but ad sizes are the same.
